Which Detector to Buy?
Answers to Your Questions

Dirt DiggingMany people email us and ask us which detector should they buy. The answer depends on where you will be do your detecting. Will you be mostly detecting beaches or parks and totlots, or fields and woods? It also depends on where you live. Some areas have a high ground mineralization.

If you are just starting out and want to buy a cheaper detector, or beginner detector then the Garrett Ace250 is the most popular one. Also you may want to look into White's Prizm's. Many people also get Bounty Hunter detectors to start out with.

Also hitting the stores and eBay are detectors that are made in China, which are costing about $50.00. They will work, but remember you get what you pay for, and getting them serviced would not be an option.

The information below you might find helpful too.

Question: I'm looking to buy a high end metal detector . Could someone please let me know what kind is the best? Looking to use it on land and maybe at times on the beach . I've owned detectors before . But not very good ones I guess you get what you pay for !

Answer: My recommendation would be a Fisher CZ 7 for minimal investment yet a high end unit. You can get a good used one for about $450. There not heavy, rain resistant, & hunt the salt water beach well. A good coin & relic hunter inland, has visual target indicator, three tone audio.
A Soverign would be great, they are but must be covered from beach salt air, we've had three go out this year cause we didn't cover them.

If you are going to be detecting on a salt water beach the CZ's, Sovereign's and Explorer's are the best. The Tesoro Tejon is supposed to be a hot detector, not sure how well it works on salt water beaches.

A Fisher CZ 5, CZ 7, CZ 70 or Minelab Sovereign can be had at decent prices. The CZ has a quicker learning time than the Sovereign.

Classic IDXQuestion: Hello. I am wanting to get my husband a metal detector for a gift. I know absolutely nothing about them. I am looking for information that could assist me in purchasing a detector of good quality and fair price. I am looking for a detector that can be used in all weather conditions, climates, and soil types.

I think he would like one that can be 'set' or 'dialed' to look for specific objects or perhaps show a picture, if they do that. I don't want a 'cheap' or 'junk' detector. Something middle of the road or higher would do nicely. Any advice on what to stay away from, what to look for or any suggestions or comments you could offer me would be very helpful and greatly appreciated.

Answer: I would recommend White's IDX Pro as a great detector to start with. It does have ID and is a very well liked detector. The 6" coil is great accessory too. I haven't seen one bad remark on this detector. White's MXT would be another detector to look at. You can get a rain cover for most detectors.

If you want to hunt in the water you should have a waterprood detector. For fresh water I would recommend the Detector Pro Wader/Diver or Tesoro Tiger Shark. Salt water, I would recommend a Fisher CZ20 or Minelab Excalibur, with the Fisher being better built and with a lifetime guarantee. Just keep in mind that both of these have discrimination.
